Cougars Edge Seahawks In CAA Women's Tennis

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The College of Charleston claimed four singles matches to squeeze past UNCW, 4-3, in Colonial Athletic Association women's tennis on a breezy Saturday at the UNCW Courts.

On Alumni Day, the Seahawks lost their second straight match and saw their record evened at 8-8 overall and 3-3 in the CAA. The Cougars improved to 15-11 and 4-2.

Playing in gusty conditions, the Seahawks won the early point before dropping the singles portion of their final conference match of the regular season.

In doubles, UNCW's No. 2 tandem of Alix Theodossiou and Annika Sillanpaa was the first off the court following a 6-1 pounding of Charleston's Brooke McAmis and Helena Nyikos. UNCW's top team of Laura Gomez and Christine Kharkevitch then locked up the early point with a 6-3 victory over Mara Argyriou and Katherine Schofield.

But the Cougars rallied in singles and registered key  at No. 2, 3, 4 and 6 singles for the conference win.

Newcomers Madara Straume and Sabrina Barisano posted UNCW's singles victories. Madara, from Jurmala, Latvia, outlasted CofC's Liza Fieldsend, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (5), at No. 1 and Barisano, a freshman from New Rochelle, N.Y., downed Helena Nyikos, 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-4, at the No. 5 slot.

"Today was a good college tennis match," said Hans Olsen, UNCW's first-year head coach. "I sincerely appreciate all of our former players who traveled from near and far to be with us this weekend. It has been a very special weekend."

The Seahawks close out the regular season on Thursday, April 14, when Mount Olive visits the Port City for "Senior Day" at the UNCW Courts. It will be the final home appearance for Seahawk senior Christine Kharkevitch.
