Women's Tennis Battles Cougars On Alumni Weekend

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW women's tennis team welcomes back approximately 25 alumni and former coach Jenny Garrity early Saturday (April 9) when the Seahawks take on the College of Charleston in a key Colonial Athletic Association match at the UNCW Courts.

Head Coach Hans Olsen and the Seahawks, 8-7, battle the Cougars at 1 p.m. in their eighth home match of the season. Each of the women's tennis alumni will be recognized on the court following the conclusion of doubles play.

UNCW stands 3-2 in CAA matches this spring, with victories over Towson, Drexel and Delaware. Saturday's pairing is critical for seeding purposes as the CAA Women's Tennis Championships approach on April 21-24 in Burlington, N.C.

Senior Christine Kharkevitch anchors the Seahawks with a team-leading nine singles victories this spring. The Houston, Texas, product stands 9-4 in singles and 8-4 in doubles action. Overall, the Seahawks are an even 43-43 (.500) in singles and 26-15 (.634) in doubles.

The Seahawks are 4-3 at home this spring and have won two in a row on their home court.

Charleston, meanwhile, is concluding its regular season with Saturday's conference match. The Cougars own a 14-11 record and also hold a 3-2 CAA record. The Cougars are coming off a 4-2 home loss vs. Liberty last Sunday.

Seniors Brook McAmis (11-8) and Katherine Schofield (12-11) are the veterans on CofC's squad. Sophomore Helen Nyikos leads the club with a sparkling 17-3 ledger.

Alumni expected to attend Saturday's match and social activities include Katie Carlson, Cassie Martin Causey, Hartley Collins, Casey Dashiell, Jamie Degraffenreid, Kristin Mears Donovan, Molly Molony Greene, Cary Wyeth Gustavson, Miller Hales, Lindsey Hess, Sallie Kiser Hunt, Lauren Isenhour, Lindsay Leblang, Christina Lee, Hamilton Lovett, Lauren Filliettaz Lucas, Kate Marshall, Christina Riley, Priscilla Roberts, Kayla Schwenk, Angie Sekely.

Following Saturday's match, the Seahawks close out the regular season with a home match against Mount Olive on Thursday, April 14, at 2 p.m.
