Charleston Denies UNCW's Bid For Fifth CAA Men's Tennis Title

ELON, North Carolina – No. 2-seeded College of Charleston rallied after losing the doubles point with four singles victories to upset top-seeded and 67th-ranked UNCW, 4-3, in the Colonial Athletic Association Men's Tennis Championship on Sunday at Elon's Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

The Seahawks, who played in their sixth CAA finals in eight years, own a 12-9 record and must hope for an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. The Cougars raised their record to 19-6 and earned the CAA's automatic NCAA berth with their first conference tennis crown.

UNCW grabbed a quick edge in the finals by nailing down the doubles point in narrow fashion when the  No. 3 doubles team of Agustin Savarino and Josh Hublitz won in a tie-breaker, 7-6 (2), against CofC's Charlie Ghriskey and Zack Lewis.

In singles, Lewis evened the match with a 6-2, 6-2, verdict vs. UNCW freshman Aviv Ben Shabat before Seahawk sophomore Andres Torres defeated Vasily Kichigin in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 5 singles to give UNCW a 2-1 edge.

Ghriskey, however, evened the match again with a win at the No. 3 position and Garrett Gordon gave the Cougars a 3-2 edge by downing Hublitz, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 6 singles.

UNCW senior Christian Van der Burgh squared the match again by outlasting CofC's Rodrigo Encinas, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, at No. 2 singles, but CofC's Juan Estevarena edged 120th-ranked Santtu Leskinen, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, at the top of the lineup in the last match on the court for the dramatic win.
