WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Freshman Laura Gomez clinched the match for the fourth time this season as UNCW trimmed Drexel, 4-3, in Colonial Athletic Association women's tennis action on Good Friday at the UNCW Courts.
The Seahawks won their second in a row to improve to 7-6 overall and 2-2 in the CAA. The Dragons are now 10-4 and 0-2 in the conference.
UNCW won the critical doubles point in close fashion to gain an early advantage. After dropping the No. 3 doubles match, Gomez and senior Christine Kharkevitch swept past DU"s Honami Yazawa and Clary Rodriquez Cruz, 6-2. The No. 2 tandem of Madara Straume and Sabrina Barisano then notched the point with a narrow 7-5 decision over Erin Bowsher and Ryshena Providence.
In singles play, Kharkevitch increased the margin to 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-0 rout of Bowsher at the No. 2 position before the Dragons got on the board with a win at No. 5. After Drexel won at No. 6 singles to even the score at 2-all, Straume cruised past Yazawa at the top of the lineup, 6-2, 6-4, and Gomez then clinched the match with a hard-fought 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3) victory over Providence at No. 4 singles.
The Seahawks return to action next Saturday, April 2, when they take on Delaware in Richmond.
