Seahawks Bash Brown For Third Straight Tennis Victory

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Sophomore Andres Torres clinched the match with a three-set win over Brown's Aaron Sandberg as the UNCW men's tennis team defeated the Ivy League Bears, 5-2, in pleasant conditions early Sunday at the UNCW Courts.

The Seahawks won their third straight match and opened a brief two-match homestand on a successful note. UNCW entertains South Carolina State for its next match on Saturday, March 5, at Noon.

"Brown is the feistiest team we've played this year," said Mait DuBois, UNCW's ninth-year head coach. "They played with intensity from start to finish. It made for a very tough atmosphere, and I was pleased with how our guys stepped up and handled it.

"They created a tough environment and it will help our team. I was very impressed with their team. The match came down to some tough moments and we were able to push through on those. We have some players starting to step up and good things are coming their way."

UNCW has clinging to a 3-2 lead when Torres, playing No. 6 singles, rallied from behind for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 decision over Sandberg. It was the second straight clincher for the second-year player from Armenia, Colombia.

In doubles play, the Bears won the first match off the court before the Seahawks battled back to take the No. 2 and No. 3 matches for the early point. Christiaan Van der Burgh and Aviv Ben Shabat nailed down the point with a narrow 7-6 (3) victory against Sandberg and Gregory Garcia at the No. 2 slot.

Sophomore Javier Restrepo pushed the lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph at No. 4 singles over Brown's Jack Haworth and No. 1 player Santtu Leskinen breezed past Garcia at the top of the lineup, 6-3, 6-4, to increase the lead to 3-0.

But the Bears answered with victories at No. 5 and No. 3 singles until Torres preserved the win with his three-setter against Sandberg.
Van der Burgh, one of two seniors on the team, leads the team with five singles wins following Sunday's verdict over Garcia.
