Seahawks Clip Camels In Women's Tennis, 5-2

BUIES CREEK, North Carolina – Freshman Laura Gomez defeated Claire Bedi at No. 6 singles to clinch the match as UNCW raced past host Campbell, 5-2, in women's tennis Thursday at the James R. Nesbet Tennis Center.

The Seahawks won their third straight match to improve to 3-2 on the season. Campbell owns a 5-2 record.

"Our team has been working hard on mental strength and team energy," said first-year UNCW Head Coach Hans Olsen. "Today was a great test for both attributes against a feisty Campbell team in very strong, windy conditions."

UNCW won the important doubles point with victories at the No. 3 and No. 1 positions. Madara Straume and Sabrina Barisano blanked Maud Mrad and Ewa Talenga, 6-0, at No. 3 doubles and following a loss at No. 2, the top duo of Annika Sillanppa and Alix Theodossiou edged Iri Karangozishvili and Ana Maria Ortiz, 7-6 (9), for the point.

Campbell evened the score at 1-all with a victory at No. 3 singles before Sillanpaa thumped Ortiz, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 2 singles for a 2-1 advantage.
The Camels squared the match at 2-all with a win at No. 4 singles, but the Seahawks reeled off victories at the No. 5, No. 6 and No. 1 positions to close out the match.

Gomez, a newcomer from Naples, Fla., provided the clincher, beating Bedi, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 6 singles.

The Seahawks return to Wilmington for only their third home match of the season tomorrow (Friday, Feb. 26) against East Tennessee State at 2 p.m. The Camels travel to Lynchburg, Va., on Thursday, Mar. 3, to take on Big South Conference rival Liberty.
