Seahawks Host Bucknell, N.C. Central This Weekend

2016 Hampton Inn University Area Seahawk Softball Classic Central
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Riding a five-game win streak, the UNCW softball team continues its season-opening homestand this weekend by welcoming Bucknell and N.C. Central to Boseman Field for the Hampton Inn University Area Seahawk Softball Classic.

The three-day tournament begins on Friday night as Bucknell faces the Seahawks at 6 p.m. There will be three games played on Saturday and Sunday.

Tickets for each day of the tournament can be purchased for $7 for adults and $2 for children. They are available in advance by calling the UNCW Athletics Ticket Office at 800-808-UNCW or by visiting the Tickets page at UNCWSports.com. In addition, tickets will be available on game day beginning 60 minutes prior to the first game.

Off to a 7-2 start, the Seahawks completed a perfect slate last weekend against Delaware State, Rhode Island and Lafayette during the Lafayette Ford Lincoln of Fayetteville Showcase. UNCW hit an impressive .341 as a team while outscoring its opponents by a 29-4 margin with three shutouts.

Freshman Kali Jones led the Seahawks' offensive explosion by hitting .692 last weekend with eight runs scored and three runs batted in. She was also an impressive 4-for-4 in stolen base attempts as the Seahawks swiped 15 bases in five games.

Freshman Hannah Adamczyk continued her solid start to the season by hitting .467 in last weekend's tournament with a double and two runs batted in while junior Claudia Spinelli boasted a .385 batting average with five doubles and eight RBI.

The Seahawks used a strong effort from freshman Haley Lenderman in the circle last weekend as the team put together a 0.60 earned run average. Lenderman, who leads the team with a 3-0 record this season, earned two of those wins last weekend while not allowing a run in 13.0 innings of work.

Entering the weekend with a 2-3 record, Bucknell opened its season last weekend by competing at the ECU Pirate Clash. The Bison began the weekend with back-to-back wins over Saint Francis and East Carolina before dropping three straight games to close out the tournament.

Sophomore infielder Meghan Kovac was named as the Patriot League's Player of the Week after going 11-for-16 at the plate with two doubles, a home run and five runs batted in. Meanwhile, senior pitcher Amanda Fazio claimed Patriot League Pitcher of the Week notice after compiling a 1.84 earned run average in four appearances while posting 15 strikeouts.

N.C. Central will be aiming for its first win of the season this weekend as the Eagles have lost their first seven games of the campaign. The Eagles were limited to just one run in five games at the USC Upstate Invitational last weekend.

Junior Dominique Wilson is the Eagles' leading hitter with a .313 average. She also has two of the team's three doubles. She has also made four starts in the circle this year and has a 5.68 earned run average with six strikeouts.

The Seahawks complete their season-opening homestand next weekend with the Seahawk Softball Showcase against Virginia and Radford. The two-day tournament will feature a tripleheader each day.
