Seahawks Begin Road Slate at East Carolina

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – After opening its home schedule with a victory on Friday night, the UNCW women's basketball team aims to begin its road slate in similar fashion as the Seahawks visit East Carolina for an 11:30 a.m. non-conference contest at Minges Coliseum on Wednesday.

The Seahawks, who are aiming for their second 2-0 start in the last three years, are coming off a 64-56 triumph over Norfolk State on Friday night inside Trask Coliseum. Redshirt junior forward Jenny DeGraaf, who was making her first appearance after transferring from Penn State, had an impressive debut for the Seahawks after setting career highs with 15 points and 15 rebounds.

Junior guard Madison Raque also had a solid start to the season by matching her career high with 14 points. Junior center Rebekah Banks narrowly missed earning the first double-double of her career after scoring nine points with 10 rebounds.

Currently in the middle of a four-game homestand to open the season, East Carolina posted a pair of victories to open the season last weekend. After routing Greensboro College by a 107-40 margin in their seasonal debut, the Pirates edged Detroit, 83-81, in overtime on Sunday afternoon.

Graduate student Kristen Gaffney paced the Pirates last week to earn American Athletic Conference Player-of-the-Week honors. She averaged 27.5 points per game while shooting an impressive 68.6 percent from the field by making 24-of-35 attempts.

UNCW and East Carolina, which were Colonial Athletic Association rivals for 17 seasons from 1984-85 to 2000-01, will meet for the 55th time in a series the Pirates lead by a 31-23 margin. However, it is the first installment in the series since Nov. 20, 2011, a game UNCW won by a 64-53 count at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks continue their first road stretch of the season by visiting former CAA foe Georgia State on Sunday, Nov. 20, at 2 p.m.
