Volleyball Preview: College of Charleston


WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW closes out the season on Sunday with a 1 p.m. start on Sunday against rival College of Charleston in Hanover Hall.

The Seahawks missed qualifying for the Colonial Athletic Association tournament for the first time since 2012. The Cougars, meanwhile, enter Sunday in a tie for the conference lead with Northeastern. UNCW and CofC met in last year's conference championship match and it was the Seahawks who earned their first conference title and trip to the NCAA tournament.

UNCW is coming off a sweep of visiting Elon last Monday as senior setter Alyssa Desjardins recorded a double-double of 20 assists and 12 digs. She became just the third Seahawk to surpass 2,500 career assists and 1,000 digs. Sydney Brock and Nicole Lott led UNCW with 10 kills apiece while the Seahawks forced Elon into 28 attacks errors. The win gave UNCW a sweep of the season series with Elon.

Charleston carries a two-match winning streak into Sunday's regular season finale. The Cougars swept both Elon and William & Mary following a brief three-match skid. Senior Maddie Hills leads the way offensively with 275 kills while Kennedy Madison and Devon Rachel follow with 270 and 222 kills, respectively.

Earlier this season, the Seahawks edged CofC, 3-2, in Charleston. Maddy Kline matched her career-high with 22 kills that night while Kristen Powell and Nicole Lott added 12 apiece. Hills led four Cougars in double-digit kills with 17.

Sunday will also be Senior Day as UNCW recognizes the senior class of Desjardins, Lott, Powell and Bella Borgiotti.
