WILMINGTON, North CarolinaAfter another strong non-conference season, UNCW opens Colonial Athletic Association play in a big way on Friday when it hosts preseason favorite College of Charleston at 7 p.m. in Hanover Hall.

The two teams split last year's conference season home-and-home, each winning on its home court, but the Cougars ended the Seahawks' season when they rallied for a 3-2 win in the semifinals of the CAA Championship in Charleston.

UNCW carries a three-match winning streak into the conference opener after sweeping all three matches at the Courtyard by Marriot Classic last weekend. Junior Nicole Lott and Kristen Powell shared tournament most valuable player honors and senior Meredith Peacock earned an all-tournament spot.

Lott has taken over as the Seahawks top option on offense as she leads the team with 149 kills (3.63/s) and 469 attacks. Powell is next with 87 kills and Peacock is third with 70.

Defensively, the Seahawks have continued to be impressive, leading the conference in blocks per set (3.16) and rank 12th nationally. Freshman Anna Moss leads UNCW upfront, averaging 1.49 blocks per set. Senior defensive specialist Lindsay Hartmann has been named CAA Defensive Player-of-the-Week twice and ranks third in the conference with 4.68 digs per set. The Seahawks also pace the league in opponent hitting average, limiting opponents to a .121 average.

CofC, meanwhile, ranks in the middle of the pack for the most part in all conference statistics, but are third in both kills and digs. The Seahawks will have to keep an eye on Melissa Morello and Kennedy Madison, who enter the weekend with 188 and 137 kills, respectively.

Birttany Vallez has 215 digs in 51 sets (4.22 digs/s) and Morello is second on the team with 152 digs.

Friday's match is the middle match of a season-long seven-match homestand for the Seahawks. The stretch continues on Oct. 2 with a 7 p.m. start against Northeastern.

UNCW finished its non-conference slate over the weekend, sweeping through its own Courtyard by Marriott Classic. The...
