WILMINGTON, North Carolina – With five returning letter winners on its roster, the UNCW women's golf team will begin the 2015-16 schedule this weekend by competing at the William & Mary Invitational.
The three-day, 54-hole tournament will begin with the opening round on Sunday, Sept. 13 on the Plantation Course at the Kingsmill Resort. The 12-team field will be playing a 6,000-yard, par 72 course.
Senior
Annette Lyche (Baerum, Norway) will lead the Seahawks' lineup this weekend. A two-time first team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection, Lyche paced UNCW with a 75.04 scoring average last year and posted five top-10 finishes.
Joining Lyche in the lineup this weekend will be sophomore
Kayla Thompson (West Bladen H.S./Clarkton, N.C.), senior
Meghan Theiss (Oldham County H.S./LaGrange, Ky.), sophomore
Alaina Yeatts (Trinity School/Durham, N.C.) and freshman
Ellinoora Moisio (Kaarina, Finland). Junior
Sydney Boyd (E.A. Laney H.S./Wilmington, N.C.) will compete as an individual this weekend.
Thompson appeared in eight tournaments as a freshman and carded a 79.36 scoring average while Theiss will be returning to action after missing the Spring season due to injury last year.
Yeatts competed in five tournaments last year with a 79.40 scoring average while Moisio will be making her collegiate debut. Boyd played in six tournaments during the 2014-15 campaign.
The tournament field will include Appalachian State, Bucknell, Eastern Kentucky, High Point, Longwood, North Dakota State, Presbyterian, Radford, Seton Hall, Western Carolina and William & Mary.
UNCW used a third-place effort from Lyche to earn fourth place in last year's William & Mary Invitational. Elon led wire-to-wire to capture the team championship with a 19-over par team score (300-285-298=893).
