Amy Bambenek previews opening weekend at Clemson

Live Stats (All Matches) | Weekend Notes | Audio of Head Coach Amy Bambenek on AM630
UNCW opens its seventh season under the direction of Head Coach Amy Bambenek on Friday when they take on Clemson on the first day of the Big Orange Bash, in Clemson, S.C. Opening serve is slated for 7 p.m. at Jervey Gym.

The Seahawks were picked to finish second in the Colonial Athletic Association and feature the league's preseason player-of-the-year in senior middle Meredith Peacock. Also returning for UNCW is junior outside hitter Nicole Lott, who was a All-CAA preseason honorable mention selection. Lott is UNCW's top returned in kills (279) while Peacock was the conference-leader in total blocks (178) and blocks per set (1.53). Both figures ranked her in the nation's top-10 statistical leaders.

The Seahawks will also play Appalachian State and Charleston Southern on Saturday at 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., repsectively.

Season Preview
BLOCKING AND DEFENSE
The Seahawks led the CAA in blocking and were nationally ranked in both total blocks and blocks per set, checking in at 14th on both lists. Heading that impressive effort was AVCA All-East Honorable Mention and CAA first-teamer Meredith Peacock. As a junior, Peacock was fifth nationally in blocks per set and sixth in total blocks. Joining Peacock, who was named CAA Preseason Player-of-the-Year by the CAA coaches, up front are juniors Nicole Lott (0.52) and Kristen Powell (0.87) and sophomores Sarah Kelly (1.30) and Sydney Brock (1.04). Kelly earned CAA All-Rookie honors following an impressive second half of the season and Brock returns to the lineup following a knee injury suffered early in the first half of conference play.

While blocking was a major component of the Seahawk success in 2014, the libero/defensive specialist combination of senior Lindsay Hartmann (256) and junior Morgan Owney (325) helped UNCW rank third in the conference in opponent hitting percentage and 32nd nationally. Joining Hartmann and Owney in passing the 200-dig level were setters Alyssa Desjardins (252) and Victoria Phillips (222). Lott added 215 digs and 55 total blocks.

HITTING AND SETTING
The Seahawks did lose one of the program's all-time leading hitters in Morgan Kline, and the offense was in the middle of the pack in the conference, ranking fifth in hitting percentage (.202), sixth in kills (12.31) and sixth in assists (11.44).

Lott is the leading returner with 279 kills while Powell added 200 kills of her own. The two, along with Peacock will look to ease the loss of Kline's 354 kills.

At setter, Desjardins and Phillips split duties with both having success as Desjardins doled out a career-high 693 assists while Phillips finished one off tying her career-high with 456 assists. Joining the duo is junior transfer Bella Borgiotti, who played at East Carolina her first two seasons in college.

NEWCOMERS
UNCW has seven newcomers on the roster this season as Anna Moss, Borgiotti, Maddy Kline, Jessica McClellan, Sydney Alvis, Halle Hunt and Katie McCullough join the program.

Moss, Kline, Hunt and McCullough will help give the Seahawks depth at the outside and middle hitter spots while McClellan and Alvis will add depth at the middle blocker and defensive specialist positions, respectively.
