Seahawks Handle State Rival Campbell In Women's Tennnis

UNCW-CU Match Results

WILMINGTON, North Carolina –
The UNCW women's tennis team continued its late-season surge by cruising past state rival Campbell, 5-2, in non-conference action Thursday at the UNCW Courts.

The Seahawks won for the sixth time in seven outings to improve to 9-7 on the season. The Camels wrapped up their regular season and carry a 10-9 record into the Big South Championships next week in Asheville, N.C.

"Today was a very competitive and hard-fought tennis match," said John Ware, UNCW's first-year coach. "We got off to a slow start in doubles, but finished strong and did a great job of closing out the matches at the top two spots."

After rain pelted the Wilmington area early in the day, the skies cleared, the courts were squeegeed, and the two state rivals clashed in the 17th meeting between the two teams.

UNCW secured the early point for the 10th time in 16 matches with victories at the top two doubles positions.

The No. 2 team of Miller Hales and Alyssa Ritchie got things rolling with an 8-3 victory over Campbell's Ana Maria Ortiz and Georgina Segarra. The top tandem of Christine Kharkevitch and Annika Sillanpaa then notched the point with an 8-5 decision over Tamara Stanic and Maud Mrad.

Sophomore Alix Theodossiou increased the lead to 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-2, victory over Mrad at No. 5 singles and Ritchie, a senior from Franklin, Ohio, extended her winning streak to 12 matches with an impressive 6-4, 6-2, dismantling of Stanic at No. 1 singles. Ritchie, the reigning CAA Player-of-the-Week, raised her singles record to 14-2 this season.

With UNCW holding a commanding 3-0 margin, the Camels rallied for victories at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, but senior Hamilton Lovett, playing No. 5 singles. closed out the match for the Seahawks with a 6-4, 7-6, triumph over Ortiz. It marked the second straight clincher for Lovett and her third of the season.

"We knew there were going to be some long matches in singles," Ware continued, "and offer up plenty of challenges. We knew what to expect and have been focusing hard on managing the time between points and making sure we are approaching the line with a positive mindset."

The Seahawks conclude the regular season early Saturday with an 11 a.m. match against visiting Charleston Southern at the UNCW Courts. It will be the final home appearance for the senior trio of Ritchie, Hales and Lovett.

"Our entire team continues to make big improvements and today's match against Campbell was a great test for how we handle tough moments."
