Charleston Downs Seahawks In Women's Tennis, 5-2

UNCW-CofC Match Results

CHARLESTON, South Carolina –
UNCW senior Alyssa Ritchie ran her singles record to 13-2, but the College of Charleston downed the visiting Seahawks, 5-2, in Colonial Athletic Association women's tennis Friday at the CofC Tennis Center.

The Cougars won their fifth consecutive match to improve to 9-12 overall and 2-1 in the CAA with the conference victory. The Seahawks fell to 7-7 and 2-2.

"Charleston was a little tough for us today," said first-year UNCW Head Coach John Ware. "We put in a great physical effort, but the mental focus in the big moments got away from us a bit and we got away from our game plans.

"Give credit to Coach (Angelo) Anastopoulo's team for outworking us on a few courts and just being more poised in the tight moments. We still gained valuable experience from today's tough match and will get back to work for our match against Campbell later this week."

In a rematch of last year's CAA championship final, Charleston won two of the three doubles matches by tie-breaker to nail down the early point and then added four singles victories to claim the match. It marked the first time in the last six outings that the Seahawks have lost the doubles point.

CofC's top tandem of Jenny Falcone and Katherine Schofield edged UNCW's Annika Sillanpaa and Christine Kharkevitch, 7-6, and the No. 3 team of Grace Baker and Jane Jones registered an identical triumph over Alix Theodossiou and Hollie Champion to give the Cougars the doubles point.

In singles, the Cougars won the first four matches off the court before Ritchie, a four-year player from Franklin, Ohio, knocked off CofC's Samantha Maddox, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 1 singles. Junior Christine Kharkevitch added UNCW's other win when CofC's Mara Argyriou retired at the No. 3 position.

Charleston now leads the all-time series with the Seahawks by a 14-3 margin.

Ware's club has just two matches remaining before the CAA Championships get under way on April 16 in Williamsburg, Va. The Seahawks return home to entertain Campbell on Thursday, April 9, at 3 p.m. before winding up the regular season schedule on Saturday with an 11 match against Charleston Southern.
