Strong week at the plate for Terence Connelly
The Seahawks had a tough week, going 1-3 with a win over Elon, but dropped two to the Phoenix after a 6-5 setback in 12 innings against North Carolina. UNCW did though clinched a berth in the Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament and will compete in the conference post season for the 30th consecutive season and is the only school in the league to do so.

UNCW opened the week losing a heartbreaker to North Carolina as the Tar Heels plated the winning run on a balk. UNC bolted out to a 5-1 lead early, but the Seahawks rallied to tie the game in the fourth inning. From there it was a battle of the bullpens as neither team could push anything across until the 12th.

The Seahawks returned to conference play with three games at Elon and dropped the first two to a hot-Elon team, which had won its last two entering the series.

Elon opened the series with a 14-3 win and after Saturday was postponed by rain, won the series with a 9-3 win on Sunday in the first game. UNCW, however, averted the sweep with a 14-6 win in the series finale. Zach Shields was the big bat for the Seahawks hitting his second homer of the season amongst a four-hit outing.

The Seahawks have another tough week ahead of them when they host Coastal Carolina on Tuesday before heading to Buies Creek for a Wednesday game at Campbell. UNCW then returns to conference play when it hosts Delaware in a three-game series that opens May 1 at 6 p.m.

Former Seahawk standout Cody Stanley was called up to the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday and picked up his first career hit when he pinch hit late in the game. With Stanley earning the promotion, the Seahawks now have two former players in the show. Chris Hatcher is a relief pitcher with the Dodgers after being traded in the off season by the Miami Marlins. This is the third time a pair of UNCW players have been in the major leagues after Hatcher reached the Marlins in 2010 and John Raynor played for the Pirates the same season.

Stanley becomes the eighth Seahawk to reach the major leagues, joining Bill Harris (1968), Bill Haywood (1968), Carl Willis (1984), Brian Smith (2000), Jason Roach (2003) and Hatcher and Raynor.

Earlier in the week, Tyler DeLoach was promoted by the Los Angeles Angels to their AAA affiliate Salt Lake City and earned a win in his debit. DeLoach tossed seven shutout innings and faced the minimum over his outing thanks to three double plays.
