Seahawks Fall In Regular Season Women's Tennis Finale, 6-1

UNCW-CSU Match Results

WILMINGTON, North Carolina –
Big South Conference regular season champion Charleston Southern won its fifth straight match to spoil the regular season finale for the UNCW women's tennis team, 6-1, on Saturday at the UNCW Courts.

The Buccaneers raised their record to 15-2 and improved to 6-1 on the road this spring. The Seahawks will carry their 9-8 overall mark and 3-1 conference record into this week's Colonial Athletic Association Championships in Williamsburg, Va.

In Saturday's match, played under ideal conditions, the Bucs swept all three doubles matches in close fashion for the early point and then tacked on five of the six singles matches for the decisive win. It was the final home appearance for UNCW seniors Miller Hales, Hamilton Lovett and Alyssa Ritchie.

"You have to give credit to Coach (Mike) Baker and his team for being too good today," said first-year UNCW Head Coach John Ware. "We came out very good in doubles and put ourselves in a position to win, but CSU was a little too tough down the stretch.

"We gave a great effort in singles, brought good energy and stayed disciplined. CSU played just enough offense to get the wins.

"It was an emotional day for our seniors. This senior class has come a long way and made major contributions in our matches. It's always difficult to see another class graduate, but they join a very special and supportive alumni group and know they will be Seahawks for life."

The No. 1 doubles team of Angelica Sidorenko and Mi'Kola Cooper trimmed UNCW's Christine Kharkevitch and Annika Sillanpaa, 8-5, and the No. 3 tandem of Sophie Cloessner and Marketa Placha secured the point with an 8-5 decision over Hollie Champion and Alix Theodossiou.

In singles, CSU won the first five matches off the court and clinched the match on Cloessner's 6-2, 6-2, victory over Lovett at the No. 5 position.

UNCW's lone win came at No. 3 singles when Kharkevitch outlasted Sidorenko, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.

Ritchie, meanwhile, had her 12-match winning streak snapped by Placha, the reigning BSC Player-of-the-Year, who cruised to a 6-2, 6-0, victory at the top of the lineup.

Despite the loss, the Seahawks still own a 9-6-1 advantage in the 16-match series with the Buccaneers.
