Chanticleers Down Seahawks In Women's Tennis, 5-2

Match Results

CONWAY, South Carolina –
Host Coastal Carolina won the doubles point and added four singles victories to defeat UNCW, 5-2, in non-conference women's tennis action Wednesday at the CCU Tennis Complex.

The Chanticleers evened their record at 4-4 on the season after winning their third straight match. The Seahawks lost their fourth consecutive outing to fall to 2-5 this spring.

"It was a long, tough match," said first-year UNCW Head Coach John Ware. "We played with great energy and put in a good effort, but until we can put a team full of players who insist on playing a complete match in their game plan, we're going to struggle to find wins against good teams."

CCU picked up the early point in close fashion by winning the decisive match at No. 1 doubles. UNCW's No. 2 tandem of Alyssa Ritchie and Miller Hales topped Marie Babayan and Sarah Bondar, 8-3, before CCU's No. 3 team of Natalie Wall and Cari Berry topped Christin Kaupper and Alix Theodossiou, 8-5.  CCU's No. 1 unit of Libby Scott and Honami Yazawa edged Annika Sillanpaa and Christine Kharkevitch, 8-7 (7), to help the Chanticleers take the point.

In singles, Bondar trimmed Theodossiou, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 3 to increase the lead to 2-0 before Ritchie cruised past Yazawa, 6-4, 6-2, at the top of the lineup to slice the deficit to 2-1.

But Scott edged Kharkevitch, 7-5, 7-5, at No. 2 singles to push the lead to 3-1 before Wall outlasted Hamilton Lovett, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2, at the No. 4 slot to clinch the match.

UNCW registered its second singles win at the No. 5 position when Hales carved out a 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 victory against Mila Majtan.

The Seahawks next return home to entertain rival East Carolina on Friday, March 6, at 1 p.m.
