Behind The Number: Joe Bertone

With the season just around the corner, we'll take a look at the UNCW baseball program and the players who make up the roster.

Joe Bertone enters his third season with the Seahawks after hitting .283 with four home runs and 12 runs batted in. Bertone was named CAA Player-of-the-Week following a breakout performance against eventual conference champ, College of Charleston late in the season.

The Seahawks open the 2015 season with Richmond on Feb. 13, as part of the Buffalo Wild Wings Battle at the Beach Classic.

Bertone actionUNCWSPORTS.COM: Why did you choose to attend UNCW?
JB: I have always loved the beach, so the location was a big part in the decision. However, it was the energy that surrounded the program that really showed me that this was where I needed to be. I saw a town with an outstanding fan base that loved to get behind their baseball team. I immediately felt that it would be a great honor to be a part of the team that brings this town a championship.

UNCWSPORTS.COM: Describe a moment when you felt the most Seahawk pride.
JB: I feel the most Seahawks pride every time I put on that uniform. It is a blessing to be able to represent this university while playing a game that I have loved my entire life.

UNCWSPORTS.COM: Take us through your pre-game mental preparation routine.
JB: Before the game, I like to spend some time alone and focus on what I need to do that day. I need to clear my head of all outside stressors and mentally prepare myself to be focused entirely on baseball for the next few hours. However, when it gets closer to game time, I like to spend time with the guys. I think it is important to maintain focus, but also be able to have fun and stay loose at the same time.

UNCWSPORTS.COM: Do you belong to any other clubs, groups or organizations?
JB: FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes)

UNCWSPORTS.COM: What are some community activities you or your team have done?
JB: Our team is actively involved in many activities around the Wilmington community. Most notably, we always participate in the Miracle League program throughout the fall.

UNCWSPORTS.COM: What is your intended or declared major and why did you choose that major?
JB: I have declared a major in Business Administration with a concentration in the field of finance. I believe that choosing this degree will put me in a very good position to establish a respectable career once my playing days are over.

UNCWSPORTS.COM: Describe your dream job:
JB: My dream job would be winning the royal rumble and going on to headline Wrestlemania. Recognizing that this is a very improbable scenario, I would like to go on and earn my Master's degree and then possibly begin a career in investment banking.

UNCWSPORTS.COM: If you could play another sport at UNCW, what would it be and why?
JB: Since we do not have a football team, my next choice would be golf. Golf is a sport where I can still swing hard and hit a ball a long way, which is something that I enjoy to do very much.

UNCWSPORTS.COM: Favorite team tradition/activity and why?
JB: Every Monday night, a number of us guys get together and watch Monday Night Raw. It gives us a good opportunity to all get together and relax for just a few hours. I feel as if it has really improved our team chemistry.

UNCWSPORTS.COM: Which teammate will have the most interesting job in 10 years and why?
JB: Justin Carroll has expressed interested in pursuing a career in professional wrestling once he is finished with baseball. He possesses all of the tools necessary to make a run and the World Heavyweight Championship.

UNCWSPORTS.COM: What animal would best describe you and why?
JB: A Tyrannosaurus Rex. Has a large head, extremely powerful, and eats a lot of meat.

UNCWSPORTS.COM: What is your favorite quote or phrase?
JB: "Garhrr" -Edgar from Men in Black

UNCWSPORTS.COM: What is your favorite type of food (i.e. Chinese, Mexican, Italian etc.)?
JB: I love all types of Italian food. Ladies: the key to my heart is good food. (Preferably a chicken parmesan dish with angel hair pasta)

UNCWSPORTS.COM: Favorite place you have visited or traveled to and why?
JB: I once traveled to the Miami and then the Florida Keys. I distinctively remember the weather being absolutely perfect and the water was so clear. Driving down the seven mile bridge through the Keys was an experience I will never forget.

UNCWSPORTS.COM: If you could sit down for lunch with anyone in the world, who would it be and why?
JB: My parents, grandparents, or anyone else in my family. I don't get to see them as much as I would like due to the demanding baseball schedule.

UNCWSPORTS.COM: Most addicting television show?
JB: Easy question, Monday Night Raw.

UNCWSPORTS.COM: How will you change the world (or even just one person's world)?
JB: I can change the world by continuing to follow Jesus Christ. I can challenge myself to remain a positive light in this world even when I am surrounded by darkness and negativity.

UNCWSPORTS.COM: Tell us something about yourself that most people don't know …
JB: You probably could not beat me in Madden Football.

UNCWSPORTS.COM: What is number one on your bucket list and why?
JB: Aside from any goals regarding baseball and my professional career, number one on my bucket list would be to attend Wrestlemania at some point in my life.

UNCWSPORTS.COM: What is your best non-athletic skill?
JB: Making pottery.

UNCWSPORTS.COM: What is your biggest pet peeve and why?
JB: Excuses being made rather than owning up to mistakes.

UNCWSPORTS.COM: What is something you are afraid of?
JB: I do not enjoy the company of snakes, at all.
