UNCW Breezes To Season-Opening Win Over App. St

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Behind an opening day lineup that featured four freshmen, 50th-ranked UNCW swept visiting Appalachian State, 7-0, in the season opener for both team on Saturday at the UNCW Tennis Complex.

"I was pleased with how we started our season today," said UNCW Head Coach Mait Dubois. "We had four freshmen making their college debuts and they handled it extremely well. Appalachian State is a very good team, who took the doubles point and a singles match off of us last year.  For us to go 9-0 today is a good first step. I thought Christiaan Van der Burgh did a great job in getting his win today. Ollie Casey has been very good for them and the quality of tennis was very high."

Senior Zach Hublitz gave the Seahawks the win when he upended Jake Maddox in third-singles by the scores of 6-0, 6-4. UNCW won the doubles point with wins on the second and third courts. Freshman Javier Restrepo and Hublitz topped ASU's Jan-Willem Kleyhnhans, 6-1, while freshmen Xander Veys and Taylor Cramer combined to beat Scott Webster and Trey Morris, 6-3.

For UNCW, the victory was the six consecutive season-opening match victory, dating back to 2010.

The Seahawks have a short-turnaround when they return to action on Monday at noon against Gardner-Webb.
