WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The Seahawks return to Hanover Hall on Wednesday when they host rival Campbell at 7 p.m. before heading back on the road this weekend for the second of three straight tournament weekends.
UNCW (6-1) was declared co-champions along with host East Carolina last weekend at the ECU Invitational. Both teams sported 3-0 marks with wins over Morgan State, Norfolk State and Tennessee Tech.
The Seahawks' 6-1 mark matches the 1990 squad's 6-1 mark, which is second best all-time at UNCW. The best opening to a season in UNCW history was in 1988 as the Seahawks won their first 15 matches and finished the season with an impressive 30-3 record.
While the Seahawks have won their last four outings, the road hasn't been so kind to the Camels, who have dropped their last four, following three losses at the Long Beach State Mizuno Invitational. CU dropped a 3-1 decision to nationally-ranked Duke prior to heading to the west coast.
The Camels edged the Seahawks last season, 3-2, in Buies Creek, but the Seahawks own a 29-15 lead in the all-time series. The two have split the last four editions of the rivalry, each winning on their home courts.
Senior
Morgan Kline has been the go-to hitter for the Seahawks, leading the way with 77 kills (3.08/set) on the season and hitting a crisp .266. She's second on the team in digs with 74 to her credit, trailing libero
Lindsay Hartmann's 79. Kline had 34 kills and 31 digs at the ECU Invitational and earned her second tournament most valuable player honor of the season.
Campbell, who is coached by Greg Goral, who is in his second year, will look to Alexis Hein to answer Kline. Hein leads the CU program with 70 kills while hitting .171. Last season, Hein collcted 15 kills in the Campbell victory. Defensively, libero Mary Crema is averaging 4.48 digs per set.
