UNCW Volleyball Tabbed Fifth In Preseason Poll

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Head Coach Amy Bambenek and her UNCW volleyball team were picked to finish fifth in the Colonial Athletic Association in a poll of the league's coaches the conference office released on Tuesday.

"The returning players are now a year wiser and experienced after our third-place finish last year," said Bambenek. "Pre-season rankings mostly just add fuel to our motivation in the gym. The CAA as a whole graduated a lot of talented volleyball players from last season, making the field of play open for any team to have a standout year. With two returning All-CAA players, strong senior leadership, and some up and coming talent in our underclassman, I feel confident that this year's squad is ready for a challenging conference season."

The Seahawks finished third last season after being picked by the coaches to finish last in the league. UNCW reached the semifinals of the CAA Championship tournament before falling to Northeastern. The tournament appearance was the first for UNCW since 2000.

Defending champion College of Charleston received six of a possible eight first-place votes and topped the preseason poll with 62 points. James Madison (52) and Northeastern (48) were second and third and received two and one first-place votes, respectively.

Hofstra (37), who enters its first season under the direction of Emily Mansur, the Seahawks (36) and Delaware (35) round out the middle third of the poll. Hofstra also reached the semifinals of the CAA championship before bowing to Charleston. Delaware, meanwhile, missed the CAA tournament for the first time since 2005.
Rounding out the poll in order were Towson, William & Mary and conference newcomer, Elon.

The Seahawks open the 2014 season when they host the UNCW Hilton Garden Inn Wilmington Mayfaire Classic on Aug. 29. UNCW's CAA opener will be against Northeastern on September 26 at Hanover Hall.
