Freshmen Key Volleyball Victory

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Behind strong play from freshmen Lilly Sullvan and Meredith Keefer, who combined for 11 kills and nine blocks, UNCW knocked off visiting North Carolina A&T (25-21, 25-22, 22-25, 25-21) in four sets on Friday at Hanover Hall.

The Seahawks pushed their record to 2-10 overall and 1-2 in the Coastal Athletic Association. The Aggies, meanwhile, dropped to 4-6 and 0-1.

With the fourth set tied at 13-all, Keefer knocked down a kill and A&T committed a hitting error to give the Seahawks a two-point lead. UNCW would never relinquish that lead as it fashioned a pair of four-point runs late to seal the win, 25-21.

Hannah Forbes led the Seahawks with 12 kills while Marnie Ursem added seven kills and three blocks. Sullivan finished with six kills and Keefer had five.

Tyne Ross, who leads the league in kills per set at 4.58 kills per set, held match-high honors with19 kills. Zariah Winton chipped in 10 kills and rounded out a double-double with 11 digs.

Forbes collected 10 digs for a double-double of her own.

UNCW out-blocked the Aggies, 10-7.

The series concludes on Saturday with a 2 p.m. start.
