WILMINGTON, North Carolina – For the second time in as many NCAA tournament appearances, UNCW has advanced to the second round and will face an ACC opponent when the Seahawks visit nationally-ranked Virginia on Sunday for a 1 p.m. kickoff.

The Seahawks (13-4-2), who are ranked 21st nationally, surged past Bucknell in the second half behind goals from Kalvin Kromer and Daniel Escobar for a 2-0 win over the Patriot League champion Bison on Thursday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium. The win was the first for the program in the NCAA tournament and drew the second largest crowd (2,020) in the history of the stadium.

UNCW controlled the run of play against Bucknell from the opening kick, recording the first nine shots of the game, but wasn't able to solve BU goalkeeper Clarke Fox, who finished with eight saves on the evening. The Seahawks held a 9-1 advantage in shots in the first half and finished with a season-high 20 shots. Kromer notched his second goal of the season in the 67th minute for the lead and Escobar pushed the lead to 2-0 just 1:16 later with his first career goal.

Defensively the Seahawks locked down on BU's leading score Jesse Klug, who was unable to get a single shot off. UNCW allowed just one shot on goal for the fourth time this season and limited BU to a season-low three shots for the game.

Virginia, who is the 16th seed in the tournament, received a bye in the opening round and will take the field for the first time since falling to top-seeded Notre Dame, 3-0, in the second round of the ACC tournament on Nov. 9. The Cavaliers own a 10-6-2 record this season and are ranked in all four polls, including a high-ranking of 17th in Top Drawer Soccer's rankings.

The match with Virginia will be just the second in the all-tie series, which began in 198 with a 4-0 UVA victory in Charlottesville. The Seahawks have won five straight against the ACC since 2011. UNCW has a three-game winning streak against Duke and a two-game winning streak against UNC Chapel Hill. The Seahawks swept the duo for the second straight season with a 2-1 win against the Blue Devils and a 4-3 victory over the Tar Heels. Both games were played at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

The winner of Sunday's match will advance to the third round and play the winner of the Notre Dame/Ohio State game. The Seahawks were unable to advance to the third round in 2009 in its first NCAA appearance. After tying Charlotte and advancing through penalty kicks, the Seahawks rallied late at Wake Forest, but came up short, 2-1.
