WILMINGTON, North Carolina
- Jordan Ramsey struck out seven and allowed two runs, one earned, in a
complete game outing as UNCW topped visiting VCU, 7-2, on Saturday at Brooks
Field.
With the win, the Seahawks took the weekend series and improved
to 8-6 on the season and 8-4 at home. VCU, meanwhile, dropped to 9-2 with its
second straight loss and 2-2 on the road.
Ramsey's (1-2) previous career-long was 7 and 2/3 innings
last season against Towson and his seven strike strikeouts tied his career-high
for the third time overall and second this season.
VCU starter Tyler Buckley (1-1) was saddled with the loss,
allowing three runs on eight hits and four walks in 4 and 1/3 innings.
Luke Dunlap and Ryan LaGrange paced the Seahawks with three
hits apiece while VCU's Bill Cullen raised his batting average to .429 with a
game-high four hits on the game. Drew Farber knocked in three runs with a
bases-loaded double in the sixth.
Up next: The
series concludes on Sunday with a 2 p.m. start. UNCW will send lefthander
Christian MacDonald (1-0, 3.94 ERA) to the mound while VCU counters with a
lefty of its own in Ryan Farrar (3-0, 1.66 ERA).
How it happened:
UNCW plated single runs in the first, third and fifth innings before a four-run
sixth opened up a 7-0 lead. In the sixth, pinch hitter Luis Renvil singled to
lead off and stole second. Two batters later, Dunlap doubled to left scoring
Renvil. Later in the inning after a walk and single loaded the bases, Farber
doubled to left to clear the bases and complete UNCW's scoring.
On the mound:
Ramsey, the reigning CAA Co-Pitcher-of-the-Week, scattered nine hits and walked
two while allowing just three hits with two outs. With runners on base, VCU
went just 2-forf-13 against the righthander who ended second and fourth innings
with strikeouts and runners in scoring position. Ramsey has allowed just one
earned run in his last 23 and 2/3 innings, fashioning a 0.38 ERA over that
span. On the season his ERA stands at 1.91.

his three hits were a career-high and his fourth career multi-hit game ...
