WILMINGTON, North
Carolina - Mat Batts held VCU to one run over eight innings and Ryan
LaGrange added three hits, including a home run, and three runs batted in as
UNCW topped visiting VCU, 9-3, in college baseball action on Friday at Brooks
Field.
The Seahawks improved to 7-6 with the win while handing the
Rams (9-1) their first loss of the season.
Batts (2-0) scattered nine hits and struck out four in a
season-long outing. He retired the first two hitters of all eight innings, but
all nine hits came with two out. Batts induced 15 ground ball outs on the
afternoon.
LaGrange, meanwhile, homered to lead off the third against
losing pitcher Heath Dwyer (3-1). He later added a single in the sixth and a
two-run single in the eighth. Luke Dunlap added two hits for the Seahawks.
Jordan Weymouth led VCU with three hits while James Bunn and
Joey Cujas each added two.
Up Next: The
series continues on Saturday with a 2 p.m. start. Jordan Ramsey (0-2) gets the
start for UNCW while VCU counters with Tyler Buckley (1-0).
How It Happened:
It was a three-run third and a two-run sixth for the Seahawks that lifted them
to the win. LaGrange's homer in the third and a fielding error that led to two
runs gave UNCW a 4-1 lead. Leading 4-1 in the sixth, Dunlap doubled to open the
inning and with two out Molinaro belted his third homer of the season for a 6-1
advantage.
Notes: The Rams
entered the weekend with a team ERA of 1.78, ranking ninth nationally, and
allowed eight earned runs in the contest ... Michael Bass extended his hitting
streak to nine games and his on base streak to 15 ... The Seahawks improved to
43-32 all-time against the Rams ... For UNCW head coach Mark Scalf, it was
career-win number 697 ... For Batts, he avenged his shortest outing of his career
after lasting just 2.2 innings in Richmond last season ... He lowered his ERA to
1.75 ... Jack Lane closed out the game with a ground ball double play, it was
UNCW's 18th twin-killing of the season.
