WILMINGTON, North
Carolina - Hunter Ridge banged out four hits and Terence Connelly added
three as UNCW stormed past visiting East Carolina, 10-3, in college baseball
action on Tuesday at Brooks Field.
The Seahawks improved 13-7 overall and 12-4 at home. The
Pirates, meanwhile, dropped to 11-9 on the season.
With his four hits, Ridge moved to within one of tying Jason
Appel's UNCW career record of 260 hits. Also chalking up multi-hit games were
Michael Bass and Ryan LaGrange, who also homered.
Tied at one-all in the third, LaGrange's third homer of the
season, a three-run blast to left center, gave UNCW a 4-1 lead it wouldn't
surrender.
Starter Blaze Tart (2-1) earned the win, allowing one run on
four hits and a pair of walks in 5 and 2/3 innings. ECU starter Tyler Bolton
(0-1) suffered his first lost of the season in his first career start.
Next up: The Seahawks continue their six-game homestand on Wednesday
with a 6 p.m. start against Charleston Southern.
How it happened:
In the third, Ridge led off with a single, his second of four singles on the
game, and moved into scoring position following a walk to Corey Dick. LaGrange followed
with a homer on a two-strike breaking ball from Bolton to give the Seahawks a
4-1 lead.
Inside the numbers:
The Seahawk bullpen continued to shine as Jack Lane, Ricky Holden, Kelly
Secrest and Nick Monroe combined to allow two runs, unearned, on two hits and a
walk over 3 and 1/3 innings ... Lane, Holden and Secrest each struck out the
first batter they faced ... UNCW collected four two-out RBI's ... With runners on,
ECU managed just one hit in 12 at bats ... The Seahawks went 9-for-24 with
runners on base and advanced runners 16 times in 30 opportunities ... UNCW also
scored 5-of-6 runners from third ... ECU landed just 2-of-9 leadoff hitters on
base.
Notes: Michael
Bass extended his hitting streak to 16 games and his one base streak to 22 ... He
also swiped his 10th base in as many chances this season ... Blaze Tart has now
won his last two starts and fashioned a 0.71 ERA over those two outings ... Terence
Connelly also extended his hitting streak to seven games ... UNCW snapped a
four-game losing streak to ECU at Brooks Field (last win in 2009).
