HARRISONBURG,
Virginia - James Madison hammered out 14 hits and took advantage of 10
walks to storm past UNCW, 17-5, in Colonial Athletic Association baseball
action on Friday.
The Dukes ran their winning streak to nine and improved to
11-6 overall and 4-0 in the CAA. The Seahawks saw their five-game winning
streak halted and dropped to 11-7 on the season and 0-1 in the league.
Mat Batts (1-2) was saddled with the loss, allowing eight
runs, all earned, on seven hits and a walk in 3 and 2/3 innings. JMU's Patrick
Toohers (2-2) cruised through seven innings, allowing three runs on six hits,
walking four and striking out three.
Michael Bass led UNCW with three hits and reached base
safely in all five trips to the plate. Corey Dick launched his third homer of
the season.
For JMU, Matt Tenaglia collected three hits and knocked in
four runs while Chad Carroll drove in four runs on a pair of hits.
Up next: The
series continues on Saturday with another 6:30 p.m. start. Jordan Ramsey (1-2,
1.91 ERA), the reigning CAA Pitcher-of-the-Week, takes the mound for UNCW while
the Dukes counter with lefthander Luke Drayer (2-0, 1.80 ERA).
How it happened:
JMU exploded for seven runs in the fourth as 11 hitters made their way to the
plate. All runs were scored with two out and chased Batts for his shortest
start of the season. Batts hit Cole McInturf with two out and walked Tyler Duke
to load the bases. Bobby San Martin lined a two-run single to left to open the
flood gates. Later in the inning, Tenaglia tripled to right when his fly ball
was lost in the lights, scoring three runs.
Inside the numbers:
JMU struck for 12 2-out RBI's on the night ... UNCW finished 1-for-13 in RBI
opportunities and 0-or-8 in 2-out at bats ... JMU plated five runs in the fifth
on just one hit, taking advantage of six walks ... The Dukes batted around three
times on the game.
Notes: The
Seahawks dropped their fifth straight to the Dukes in Harrisonburg and have
allowed 44 runs in their last four outings against the Dukes on the road ... UNCW
has issued 28 walks in their last four losses in Harrisonburg ... Bass raised his
average to .439 with three hits ... He also extended his hitting streak to 14
games, his on base streak to 20 games and he has stolen safely in each of his first
10 attempts with two more swipes tonight ... Ryan LaGrange and Tyler Molinaro
both extended their hitting streaks to seven games.
