WILMINGTON, North
Carolina - Blaze Tart struck out six over seven strong innings as UNCW
topped visiting Elon, 7-3, to give Head Coach Mark Scalf his 700th career
victory on Tuesday at Brooks Field.
The Seahawks improved to 10-6 with their fourth consecutive
win while the Phoenix dipped to 7-8 with their third straight setback.
Tart (1-1) allowed three runs, none earned, on four hits and
a pair of walks for the win.
Reliever Ryan Pennell (0-1) was tagged with the loss for
Elon after allowing two runs on two hits in 2/3 of an inning.
Five Seahawks had at least two hits on the afternoon as UNCW
built a 13-6 advantage in the hits column. Ryan LaGrange finished 2-for-3 with
two runs batted in while Drew Farber belted a solo homer late in the contest
and finished with two RBI's.
Next Up: The
Seahawks host Coastal Carolina on Wednesday in a 4 p.m. start. Freshman right
hander Evan Phillips (0-0. 6.75 ERA) will make his second career start for the
Seahawks.
How it happened:
Elon plated three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead only to see
UNCW respond with a three spot if its own in the bottom of the frame. Luke
Dunlap tied the game with a single to left and LaGrange broke the deadlock with
a two-run single inside the third base bag two batters later for a 5-3 lead.
Scalf Record:
Head Coach Mark Scalf stands at 700-543-1 all-time in 22 seasons at his alma
mater. He is just the third head coach in the history of the program; none of whom
have a losing record. On Wednesday he'll face off with Coastal Carolina's Gary
Gilmore, who won his 700th game with the Chanticleers over the weekend. Scalf
also picked up his 500th career win in 2007 against Elon.
Notes: Joining
LaGrange and Dunlap with two-hit games were Michael Bass, Luis Renvill and
Hunter Ridge ... Bass extended his hitting streak to 12 games and his on base
streak to 18 ... Dunlap and LaGrange are now hitting .356 and .382, respectively ...
For Tart, he lowered his ERA to 3.60 on the season ... UNCW used four relievers
to get the final six outs of the contest ... Freshman William Shepley retired the
only batter he faced in the ninth to record his first collegiate save ... UNCW
advanced runners 16 times in 25 chances and scored a runner from third on
5-of-8 opportunities ... The Seahawks improved to 10-4 at home and 26-19 all-time
against Elon.
