WILMINGTON,
North Carolina - Hofstra closed the contest on an 11-1 run to
erase a four-point deficit and defeat UNCW, 75-69, in Colonial Athletic
Association women's basketball action Tuesday at Trask Coliseum.
The Pride picked up their ninth victory in 12 games as
they evened their season mark at 10-10 and moved to 6-3 in league play. The
Seahawks dropped their seventh straight contest to slip to 2-18 and 1-8.
Sophomore guard Andreana Thomas led four Hofstra players
in double figures with a game-high 23 points. Thomas was 5-of-11 from the floor
and 11-of-12 at the charity stripe to power a Pride attack that shot 48.1
percent (26-of-54) from the floor and 78.3 percent (18-of-23) from the line.
Senior forward Shante Evans added 16 points while junior
forward Anma Onyeuku scored 13 and junior guard Annie Payton netted 11. Evans
also added 10 rebounds for her league-leading 12th double-double of the season
as the Pride enjoyed a 41-25 advantage on the glass.
Senior guard Tawanna Lee led four UNCW players in double
figures with 20 points as the Seahawks knocked down 28-of-61 (.459) field goal
attempts for the game. Karneshia Garrett added 16 points and grabbed 12
rebounds to post her four straight double-double. Freshman guard Dana Brown
chipped in 12 points and redshirt junior guard Jessica Freeman added 11 to go
along with a game-best nine steals.
Trailiing 68-64, an Onyeuku jumper and a three-pointer
from Payton on back-to-back possessions put the Pride in front, 69-68 with 2:50
remaining.
A free throw by Garrett on the Seahawks next possession
tied the score at 69-all, only to see Hofstra regain the lead, 71-69, on a pair
of free throws by Thomas on its next trip down the floor.
The Seahawks would fail to answer on their next
possession, missing the front end of a 1-and-1 opportunity and the Pride would take
advantage, expanding their cushion to four, 73-69, on an Evans layup with 43
ticks on the clock.
A turnover brought UNCW's next possession to a close and
sent Thomas to the line, where she knocked down two more free throw attempts with
13 seconds remaining to push the Hofstra lead to six, 75-69. The Seahawks would
miss a 3-point attempt on its final possession, allowing the Pride to escape
with the six-point triumph.
Earlier in the contest, UNCW trailed 7-3 when consecutive
3-pointers by Lee sparked the Seahawks to an 18-3 run and a 21-10 advantage.
The Pride had trouble holding onto the basketball during UNCW's run, committing
12 turnovers during the 11-minute stretch.
A conventional three-point play by Evans brought the
Seahawks' run to a close and led the Pride to tally seven of the next nine
points to make it a 23-17 contest. The two sides would trade baskets the rest
of the frame as UNCW would take a 32-28 lead into the locker room.
The Seahawks tallied six of the first eight points in the
second half to push their lead to eight, 38-30, only to see the Pride use a 22-10
run to take its first lead of the frame, 52-48, with 11:07 showing on the
scoreboard.
UNCW responded to the Hofstra run, rattling 14 of the
next 21 points, capped by back-to-back triples by Lee to go back in front,
62-59.
Consecutive baskets by Onyeuku would bring the Seahawks
run to a close and put the Pride ahead, 63-62. Garrett would catapult the
Seahawks back into the lead moments later, scoring six straight points to
highlight a 6-2 stretch that made 68-64 UNCW and set up the Pride's decisive run.
Both teams return to action Thursday. UNCW is on the road
at James Madison while Hofstra entertains Northeastern. Both games are set for
a 7 p.m. start time.
