WILMINGTON, North
Carolina - Steven Linkous collected four hits and scored three runs to back
the shutout pitching of UNCW starter Mat Batts as the Seahawks rolled past
Lehigh, 15-0, on Friday in college baseball action at Brooks Field.
UNCW improved to 3-3 while the Mountain Hawks dropped to 0-1
in their season opener. The series continues on Saturday with a 2 p.m. start.
The Seahawks pounded out a season-high 16 hits and plated
another season-best with 15 runs scored. Michael Bass was one of five Seahawks
with multiple hit games, finishing with two hits, scored twice and knocked in
three runs.
No hitter in the Lehigh lineup had more than one hit as the
Seahawk pitching staff scattered four hits.
Batts (1-0) tied his season-high with seven strikeouts over
6 and 2/3 shutout innings.
Colin Gotzon (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing six runs on
five hits and a pair of hit batters in one-plus innings.
How It Happened:
UNCW jumped on Gotzon and reliever Jayme Edwards for 10 runs in the first three
innings. Tyler Molinaro, Luke Dunlap and Luis Renvill keyed a four-run first
with RBI hits. In the third, Drew Farber and Bass had two-run singles for a
10-0 lead.
By The Numbers:
The 15-0 win was the highest scoring shutout for the Seahawks since a 15-0
drubbing of Georgia State last season ... UNCW pitching fanned 10 or more batters
for the fourth time this season ... Luke Dunlap extended his hitting streak to
four, a career-long, with two doubles ... Michael Bass, meanwhile, has reached
safely in five straight and is 5-for-5 in stolen bases ... The UNCW bullpen has
now fanned 32 batters in 28 and 1/3 innings.
