WILMINGTON, North
Carolina - Dalton Rouleau had four hits to back the pitching of David Jesch
as Hofstra avoided a sweep at the hands of UNCW with a 4-2 win on Sunday in
Colonial Athletic Association baseball action at Brooks Field.
The Pride snapped a modest three-game losing streak with the
win and improved to 19-15 overall and 9-6 in the conference. The Seahawks,
meanwhile, maintained their first-place standing with a 12-3 record in the
circuit and dropped to 20-16 overall.
Jesch (4-0) allowed just two runs on four hits, walked two
and fanned five in picking up the win. Bryan Verbitsky retired all six Seahawks
he faced in the final two innings to earn his third save.
Pouleau scored twice as the first three innings as the Pride
built a 3-0 lead against emergency starter Kelly Secrest (1-1). Secrest was
inserted as the starter when Jordan Ramsey was unable to make his start due to
sickness.
Danny Poma collected three hits on the afternoon, but the
rest of the HU lineup was limited to one hit.
Thomas Pope was the lone Seahawk with a multiple hit game as
his raised his average to .331 with two hits.
The Pride plated a run in the top of the first on a wild
pitch and Jared Hammer extended that lead to 3-0 with a two-run single to right
in the third against reliever Jack Lane.
UNCW got back to within one, 3-2, on a two-run homer by
Tyler Molinaro, his ninth of the season, in the fifth inning.
UNCW's Ricky Holden saw his shutout streak halted at 26
innings when Rouleau doubled in Matt Reistetter with two outs in the ninth.
The Seahawks visit East Carolina on April 17 for a 6 p.m.
start against the Pirates in a non-conference matchup.
