CHARLESTON, South
Carolina - Michael Bass collected three hits and UNCW plated six runs in
the third inning as the Seahawks topped host Charleston Southern, 10-4, in
college baseball action Wednesday at the CSU Ballpark.
The Seahawks improved to 18-15 with the win while the
Buccaneers fell to 12-23. UNCW ran its record to 14-2 when scoring at least six
runs in a game.
Christian MacDonald (1-0) earned the win with two innings of
one-run, three hit relief. In his career-long outing, he fanned two and walked
none.
Four Seahawks had two hits, including Corey Dick, who also
drove in two runs.
In the third inning, UNCW sent 11 batters to the plate in
the outburst. Dick keyed the inning with a two-run single. Andrew Cain and Matt Campbell added RBI
doubles.
After taking an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on a RBI
single from Tomasovich, CSU loaded the bases in the fourth against UNCW starter
Thomas Jones after two runs had already scored. MacDonald, though, ended the
threat with a strikeout and kept the Seahawks in front, 6-3.
UNCW added two runs in the fifth on a RBI double by Drew Farber and a two-out single by Bass, who extended his hitting streak to 13
games.
CSU narrowed it to 8-4 in the sixth, but relievers Ryan
Leach and Tyler DeLoach combined for three hitless innings of relief.
Farber recorded his 13th sacrifice bunt of the season,
setting a program record for sophomores. Mike Rooney previously held the mark
with 12 in 2008.
The Seahawks host Colonial Athletic Association rival
Hofstra in a three-game series this weekend, beginning on Friday with a 6:30
p.m. start.
