CONWAY, South Carolina - Coastal Carolina rode a pair of big innings and held off a late charge by UNCW for an 8-6 win at Watson Stadium in college baseball action on Wednesday.
The Chanticleers improved to 6-4 with the win, while the Seahawks watched their record drop to 3-9.
Andrew Cain and Thomas Pope led UNCW with three hits apiece, with Cain scoring three runs.
Daniel Bowman and Sloan Gilliam had two hits each for the Chants. Aaron Burke (3-0) picked up the win in relief.
CCU used a pair of four-run innings to break the game open. Trailing 1-0 in the first, the Chants sent nine batters to the plate, knocking UNCW starter Thomas Jones (0-2) out of the game after allowing four runs on four hits.
A two-run double by Drew Farber, who finished with two hits, in the third for UNCW made it a one-run game, 4-3.
A second four-run outburst in the fourth staked Coastal to an 8-3 lead. Rich Witten delivered a bases-clearing double to highlight the inning.
UNCW moved to within four runs, 8-4 in the eighth, and Cain slammed a two-run homer in the ninth to complete the scoring.
The Seahawks open Colonial Athletic Association play Friday with a 4 p.m. start against defending champion and preseason favorite James Madison.
