WILMINGTON, North
Carolina - Tyler McSwain held Old Dominion in check into the eighth inning
and three Seahawks had three hits apiece as UNCW knocked off the Monarchs,
10-4, on Friday in a Colonial Athletic Association series opener at Brooks
Field.
The league-leading Seahawks improved to 8-2 in the CAA with
the home win and 13-12 overall. The Monarchs, meanwhile, dropped their third
straight and dipped to 10-16 overall and 2-5 in the league.
McSwain (4-2) earned his fourth consecutive win, limiting
ODU to four runs, three earned, on six hits over 7 1/3 innings. Kelly Secrest
closed the game out by striking out three of the five batters he faced.
Matt Campbell, Jake Koenig and Michael Bass led a 16-hit
attack for the Seahawks with three hits each. Campbell scored twice and knocked
in two while collecting three stolen bases for the second time this season.
UNCW swiped a season-high six bases on the night.
ODU's Josh Wright paced the Monarchs with three hits and
three runs scored. The bottom six hitters in the ODU lineup combined to go
1-for22 for the game. Chris Baker added two hits and knocked in a run.
The Seahawks built a 2-1 lead after two innings against ODU
starter Ben Tomchick (1-3), who suffered the loss. Hunter Ridge, who finished
with two hits and three RBIs, plated Campbell in the first and Campbell later
drove in Koenig in the second with two out.
Tomchich was roughed up for eight runs on 12 hits and a
walk, but did finish with seven strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.
UNCW broke open a 4-3 game in the sixth with four runs on
five hits for an 8-3 lead. Andrew Cain's two-run single highlighted the frame.
ODU would add a run in the eighth on a RBI single from
Baker, but UNCW tacked on two in its half of the inning to complete the
scoring.
The series continues on Saturday with a 2 p.m. start.
