ELON, North Carolina
- Garrett Kosters' solo homer run in the fifth inning proved to the difference as
Elon slipped past visiting UNCW, 5-4, in college baseball action on Tuesday at
Latham Park.
The Phoenix improved to 15-11 overall with the home win
while the Seahawks fell to 12-12.
UNCW built a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning behind RBI
singles by Jake Koenig and Michael Bass.
Elon, however, was able to answer with three runs of its own
in the bottom of the frame as UNCW starter Travis Bradley walked the leadoff
hitter and Sebastian Gomez and Alex Swim followed with singles. Swim's plated Niko
Fraser, who drew the walk. The second run came across on a ground out and the
tying run was plated on a UNCW throwing error.
Chris Bresnahan led off the fifth with a single off reliever
Tom Timoney (0-1) and moved into scoring position following a sacrifice bunt.
Fraser followed with a RBI single to give Elon a 4-3 lead.
Koster homered down the right field line off UNCW reliever
Tyler DeLoach to make a two-run deficit, 5-3, for the Seahawks.
Tyler Molinaro brought the Seahawks to within one, 5-4, with
his seventh homer of the season with one out in the seventh.
UNCW had chances with runners in scoring position in the
eighth and ninth innings, but were unable to push the tying run across.
Ryan Pennell (1-0) earned the win out of the bullpen for the
Phoenix.
Koenig and Molinaro both finished with two hits on the
night.
The Seahawks host Old Dominion on Friday in the first of a
three-game Colonial Athletic Association series at Brooks Field. First pitch is
set for 6:30 p.m.
