Diamond Hawks Rally, But Fall In Extras

RICHMOND, Virginia - Taylor Buran stole third base and scored on an ensuing throwing error as VCU edged UNCW, 5-4, in 12 innings on Saturday in Colonial Athletic Association action at The Diamond.

The Rams halted a five-game losing skid with the win and improved to 12-11 overall and 3-5 in the league. The Seahawks, meanwhile, dropped back to .500 at 11-11 and to 6-2 in the circuit.

Buran was the lead runner of a double steal in the 12th inning and scored the winning run as the throw short hopped the third baseman and skidded into the outfield.

Tyler DeLoach (1-2) was credited with the loss, allowing the run, unearned, on two hits and a walk in one inning of relief.

Matt Lees (1-2) earned his first win of the season with three shutout innings of relief for the Rams.

The top five hitters in the UNCW lineup combined for 13 hits with Tyler Molinaro, Andrew Cain and Hunter Ridge collected three hits apiece.

For VCU, Chris Ayers continued his solid series with three more hits while Vimael Machin added three hits.

VCU built a 4-1 lead through three innings as it pounced on UNCW start Mat Batts for four runs on seven hits in just 2 2/3 innings. It was his shortest outing of the season.

Behind the tremendous relief effort of Ricky Holden, the Seahawks were able to tie the game with two runs in the ninth. Holden allowed just five hits and a pair of walks in a career-long 7 1/3 innings of shutout baseball. He recorded 12 ground ball outs as the Seahawks finished with 20 assists in the field, one off the school record of 21.

In the ninth, designated hitter Micah Jarrett drew a leadoff walk from VCU starter Ryan Farrar. With one out, Campbell doubled to the wall in left putting runners at second and third. Molinaro followed with a RBI single and Cain beat out a possible ground ball double play to plate Campbell with the tying run.

Farrar went nine innings and allowed four runs on 12 hits and a walk. He fanned seven.

The series concludes on Sunday with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
