WILMINGTON, North
Carolina - Tyler Molinaro banged out three hits, including a two-run home
run in the ninth to extend the lead, as UNCW completed a season sweep of the
College of Charleston with a 7-3 win on Tuesday at Brooks Field.
The Seahawks improved to 7-1 in their last eight outings and
evened their record at 10-10. The Cougars dropped to 15-6 with the loss, just their
second road loss in 10 decisions.
After CofC narrowed its deficit to 5-3 in the seventh, Molinaro
blasted his sixth round tripper of the season off relief ace Kyle Ownings to
push UNCW's lead to 7-3 in the eighth inning.
Reliever Jack Lane (1-0) picked up the win retiring all five
batters he faced in relief of starter Travis Bradley. William Prince walked one
and fanned two in 1 1/3 innings for his first save of the season.
Ryan West (2-2) was saddled with the loss, allowing four
runs on seven hits and two walks in 2 2/3 innings.
The Seahawks built an early 5-0 lead after four innings with
three runs coming across in the third a RBI single by Hunter Ridge, a RBI
ground out by Drew Farber and a ringing double by Colonial Athletic Association
Rookie-of-the-Week Corey Dick that plated Jake Koening with the final run.
Dre Watts got CofC on the board in the fifth with a leadoff
homer off Bradley. The Cougars added two more, one earned, in the seventh
against reliever Kelly Secrest. Goodson plated a run on a Seahawk error and
Marty Gantt singled in the other run.
Thomas Pope, Koenig and Dick all finished with two hits to
lead a 12-hit UNCW offense.
No Cougar had more than one hit on the night.
With the win, the Seahawks also improved to 4-4 all-time
against the Cougars.
