WILMINGTON, North Carolina
- Led by Hunter Ridge, Thomas Pope and Michael Bass with three hits apiece,
UNCW exploded for a 14-3 win over James Madison to finish off a sweep of the defending
Colonial Athletic Association champions on Sunday at Brooks Field.
The Seahawks ran their record to 6-9, 3-0 in the CAA, with
their third consecutive win while the Dukes dropped to 5-10-1 and 0-3.
UNCW pounded out 16 hits, a season high, including home runs
from Andrew Cain and Tyler Molinaro, both finished with two hits. Pope extended
his hitting streak to nine games with his 3-hit effort. He is hitting .500
(18-36) during that span and has scored 13 runs.
Reliever Tyler DeLoach (1-1) was credited with the win after
1.2 innings of relief. UNCW starter Jordan Ramsey fanned a career-high seven,
but managed just 3.2 innings before being replaced. Kelly Secrest closed out
the game allowing one hit over 2.1 innings for his first save.
Ian Haynes led JMU with two hits on the afternoon. The Dukes
stranded 12 base runners on the afternoon, going 2-for-9 in RBI opportunities
and 2-for10 with two outs.
Both teams scored in the first inning, but UNCW jumped on
JMU starter Evan Scott (0-2) in the second for five runs. Bass and Matt
Campbell knocked in runs with back-to-back singles off Scott and Molinaro
greeted JMU reliever Aaron Hoover with a two-run homer to right to cap the
outburst.
Trailing 7-3 in the seventh and putting runners on first and
second, JMU looked to narrow the gap further, but Secrest ended the uprising
with a pop up to shortstop.
UNCW added four more runs in the seventh and three more in
the eight to close out the scoring.
The Seahawks visit College of Charleston on March 13 for a 6
p.m. start.
