WILMINGTON, North
Carolina - Kevin Grove collected two hits and scored twice while Sean O'Hare
added two hits as St. John's shutout host UNCW, 3-0, in college baseball action
Wednesday at Brooks Field.
The Red Storm improved to 3-5 with the non-conference road
win while the Seahawks dropped to 2-6 with their fifth consecutive loss. The
Seahawks were also blanked for the third time this season.
Eddie Medina (1-0) picked up the win in his first start of
the season. He limited the Seahawks to a hit and three walks over six innings
while striking out four. Stephen Rivera and James Lomangino finished off the
game for SJU out of the bullpen. Lomangino pitched a perfect ninth inning for
the save.
Jake Koenig had two of UNCW's three hits in the game. UNCW
was held hitless for the first 4 2/3 innings by Medina.
Thomas Jones (0-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing
two runs on four hits over 4 1/3 innings. Jones finished with four strikeouts
in his first start of the season after missing 2011 with an arm injury.
The bottom of the SJU order combined to go 5-for-8 with two
runs scored and two knocked in with Danny Bethea adding a hit along with Grove
and O'Hare's totals.
The Red Storm broke through in the third plating a run on a
bases loaded ground ball double play.
Bethea made it 2-0 in the fifth with a single off UNCW
reliever Ricky Holden that plated Grove.
The final run of the afternoon came in the seventh when O'Hare
singled in Zach Lauricella with two outs.
The Seahawks host the Hughes Bros. Challenge with UNC
Asheville and NC State starting on Friday. UNCA and NC State open the weekend's
games at noon followed by UNCA and UNCW at 4 p.m.
