OXFORD, Miss. - Tanner
Mathias scored both runs and Bobby Wahl limited UNCW to one hit and fanned nine
as #20 Ole Miss slipped past visiting UNCW, 2-0, in college baseball action Friday
at Swayze Stadium.
The Rebels won their second straight outing and improved to
3-1 on the young season. The Seahawks, meanwhile, were shutout for the second
consecutive game and dropped to 2-3 with the non-conference setback.
Wahl (2-0) and UNCW red-shirt sophomore Mat Batts (0-1) hooked
up in a pitcher's duel that last just two hours and five minutes. Batts nearly
matched Wahl, going seven innings and allowing two runs, one earned, on seven
hits and a pair of walks. The southpaw strikeout seven, raising his season
total to 15 in 14 innings.
UNCW's Michael Bass had both Seahawk hits on the afternoon.
For the Rebels, Auston Bousfield, Alex Yarbrough and Andrew
Mistone each collected two hits.
In the third inning, Ole Miss plated its first run when
Mathias singled with one out and stole second to move into scoring position.
After Batts retired Bousfield on a fly ball for the second out, Yarbrough
dumped a single into short center scoring Mathias.
Ole Miss added a second run in the seventh for a 2-0 lead.
Batts retired the first two batters on four pitches, but Mathias reached second
on a UNCW fielding error. He would score one batter later when Bousfield
singled to right.
UNCW's best chance to get on the board came in the fifth
when Josh Abshire reached on an error, stole second and moved to third with one
out on a balk. Wahl, however, settled down to retire the next two Seahawks with
a ground ball back to the mound a line drive to short to end the threat.
Brett Huber worked a perfect ninth for his second save of
the season.
The series continues on Saturday with another 4 p.m. EST
start at Swayze Field.
