WILMINGTON, North
Carolina - UNCW broke open a tied game with three runs in the seventh
inning of game two to knock off Ohio, 5-2, and gain a split of a doubleheader
on Saturday at Brooks Field.
The Seahawks won the series as they went 2-1. Ohio,
meanwhile, dropped to 1-2 to open the season.
With the game tied at two-all, Tyler Molinaro and Thomas Pope
opened the inning with consecutive doubles to give UNCW the lead, 3-2. Drew
Farber added a RBI ground out and Micah Jarrett tripled in the last run of the
inning for a 5-2 lead.
The nightcap was a scoreless duel until the sixth inning
when Jake Koenig singled in two runs for the Seahawks. Ohio, however, answered
with two runs in the top of the seventh to knot it up. An RBI double by Garrett
Black and a RBI single, all with two out, by Seth Streich highlighted the
rally.
Ricky Holden (1-0) earned the win for UNCW in relief while
Tom Timoney nailed down the save, retiring all six batters he faced.
Marck Paliotto (0-1) suffered the loss for the Bobcats,
allowing two runs on two hits in 1/3 of an inning.
In the opener, Streich belted a two-run homer off Tyler
McSwain (0-1) in the ninth inning to lift the Bobcats to a 6-4 win.
UNCW held a 4-1 lead after four innings, but OU rallied with
two in the fifth and one in the eighth to forge a tie.
Brett Barber (1-0) picked up the win and Tyler Backstrom the
save.
Molinaro belted his first homer of the season in the third
inning of game one to give UNCW a 2-0 lead.
The Seahawks visit NC State on Feb. 21 for a 3 p.m. start.
