WILMINGTON, North
Carolina - Thomas Pope's two-run single with two out in the 10th inning
lifted UNCW past visiting Ohio, 6-5, in the college baseball season opener for
both teams at Brooks Field on Friday.
Ohio built a 5-4 lead with a run in the top of the frame,
but Pope capped the comeback when he lined Tyler Backstrom's offering into
right center scoring Josh Abshire and pinch runner Micah Jarrett with the tying
and winning runs, respectively.
UNCW held a 4-2 lead after scoring two unearned runs in the
eighth, but OU fired back with two runs of its own and Ethan Newton tied the game
with an infield single in the top of the ninth.
In the 10th, Ohio grabbed its first lead of the game when
Ben Otto doubled in the go-ahead run with two out.
Pope was one of four Seahawks who collected two hits on the
evening. Pope and Tyler Molinaro both knocked in two runs while Abshire scored
twice.
UNCW starter Mat Batts tossed seven innings of no-hit
baseball before making way for the bullpen. Batts fanned eight, walked one and
hit two, allowing one run.
William Prince earned the win in relief while Backstrom was
saddled with the loss.
The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at
noon.
