Diamond Hawks Fall In Extra Innings

MT. PLEASANT, South Carolina - Jose Rodriguez's bases-loaded single to right scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 12th as nationally-ranked College of Charleston edged by UNCW, 5-4, on Tuesday at Patriots Point.

The Cougars, who entered the midweek test ranked as high as 19th in the Baseball America poll, ran their record to 4-0. The Seahawks fall to 1-3 in the early going and drop to 0-2 in one-run games.

After playing error free baseball for the first 11 innings, a fielding error allowed Cole Rakar to reach safely to open the 12th and a throwing error on a pickoff moved him to second. A sacrifice bunt sent Rakar to third and consecutive intentional walks loaded the bases for Rodriguez. He then lifted a fly ball to deep right that fell in and scoring the winning run.

Matt Pegler picked up the win for CofC in his season debut out of the bullpen while UNCW's Travis Bradley was tagged with the loss.

Charleston broke a 1-all deadlock in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run single by Marty Gantt with the bases loaded and two out. After UNCW starter Ryan Leach loaded the bases, UNCW reliever Andrew Harnage and Kelly Secrest both struck out batters, but Gantt was able to line a 2-1 breaking ball from reliever Tyler McSwain up the middle to score the go-ahead runs.

UNCW got one those runs back in the top of the seventh when senior pinch hitter David Shambley doubled inside the third base bag to score junior Cameron Cockman from second with one out. Cockman led off the frame with a bunt single and stole second.

Cockman, who finished with two hits and three runs batted in, pushed the Seahawks back in front, 4-3, in the eighth with a 2-run double to right off CofC reliever Nick Osterman.

The Cougars, however, replied with the tying run in the bottom of the eight off UNCW reliever Justin Bradley. Matt Leeds plated Rob Kral with a two-out single to center.

The Seahawks return to Brooks Field on Friday when they host Marist in the Hughes Bros Tires Challenge at 4 p.m. The tournament opens at noon with West Virginia and Miami (Ohio).

Notes:  UNCW scored the first run of the game for the first time this season ... Shambley improved to 2-2 in pinch hitting appearances this season ... CofC now leads the series 3-2 with the home team winning each game ... The Seahawks left 15 runners on base while Charleston left 20 ... Both teams combined to use 15 pitchers.
