All Seahawks In Series-Opening Win

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Trey Williford dominated over six innings, and eight Seahawks had at least one hit as UNCW rolled to an 18-2 win on Friday at North Carolina A&T in the opening game of a Coastal Athletic Association series at World War Memorial Stadium.

The Seahawks improved to 27-21 with the road win and 15-10 in the CAA. The Aggies, meanwhile, fell to 12-35 and 3-22 in the league.

UNCW opened the night with five runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back. John Newton's two-RBI single and a RBI double by JP Pennella highlighted the outburst.

Williford (7-1) tied his career high with 11 strikeouts while allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits and a walk over six innings. With his outing, his earned run average dropped to a league-leading 2.43.

Pennella collected three hits for the sixth time this season and scored twice, while Mason Hughes and Kevin Jones each had two hits.  Jones scored three runs and drew three free passes. Danny O'Brien belted his fourth homer of the season. UNCW drew 12 walks.

NC A&T starter Agyei Quinichett (1-5) was saddled with the loss, allowing five runs in 0.2 innings.

Ryan Allen had two hits for the Aggies.

The series resumes on Saturday with a 6 p.m. start.
