Eddinger, Walters Named Second-Team All-CAA

WILMINGTON, N.C. ? Junior Morgan Walters and freshman Kelsey Eddinger were both named Second-Team All-CAA and Eddinger was selected for the league's All-Rookie Team as the Colonial Athletic Association held its annual softball awards banquet Tuesday on the campus of Hofstra University.

Award winners were determined by a vote of the CAA's eight head coaches. Coaches could not vote for players from their own teams.

““I am excited that both Kelsey Morgan earned All-CAA recognition,” said UNC Wilmington Head Coach Kelly Van Houten, who recently completed her first season with the program. “The awards they received are well deserved for the great attitude and hard work that they put into the team and this season.”

A native of Fuquay ?Varina, N.C., Walters garners All-Conference accolades for the second time in her career as she was a Second-Team selection in 2007. She started 44 games at second base for the Seahawks in 2009 and batted .262 with 10 RBI. Walters, who became just the 27th player in program history to record 100 career base hits earlier this season, tied with senior Carley Hughes for the team-lead in hits with 39 while recording a team-high nine doubles. In the field, Walters posted a .939 fielding percentage and was second on the team with 135 putouts.

“I am very excited for Morgan as she is a player who works hard and takes pride in everything she does,” said Van Houten. “She is a team player who wants to be the best, but also strives to give her best so her team can succeed. Morgan has shown her heart and determination this season and will prove to be a dominant player next year in the CAA.”

Eddinger capped a stellar freshman campaign by hitting .327 in 101 at-bats with 33 hits, highlighted by 10 extra-base knocks that included four homeruns and a team-high three triples. The Benson, N.C., product was also quite effective on the base-paths, going 6-for-7 in stolen base attempts. Eddinger, who started 42 games in centerfield, contributed a team-high six outfield assists while committing just two errors.

“Kelsey has worked very hard this year and I cannot think of a more deserving player to receive both All-Conference and All-Rookie accolades,” said Van Houten. “She is a competitor who plays with heart and fire and wants more than anything for her team to be successful. I am excited to see her return next season and I know she will be a key part of our program for years to come.”

In other awards handed out Tuesday, Hofstra first baseman Michele DePasquale was named CAA Player-of-the-year while Pride senior Kayleigh Lotti was selected as the Pitcher-of-the-Year for the third straight season. The Hofstra duo as joined by Pride skipper Bill Edwards, who was voted CAA Coach-of-the-Year for the second year in a row and Georgia State freshman pitcher Alana Thomas, who was honored as the circuit's Rookie-of-the-Year.
