Hughes, Sawyer Honored At CAA Awards Banquet

WILMINGTON, N.C. ? UNC Wilmington junior catcher Carley Hughes was a Second-Team All-CAA selection while freshman Rachel Sawyer was named to the All-Rookie Team as the Colonial Athletic Association handed out its annual softball awards Wednesday at the pre-tournament dinner for the 2008 CAA Softball Championship.

 

““We are pleased to have two players recognized by the CAA for their performances this season,” UNCW head coach Melissa Jarrell said. “We look forward to having both players back in our lineup next season.”

 

Hughes, a First-Team All-CAA selection in 2007, led the Seahawks in nearly every offensive statistical category, including batting average (.366), hits (49), doubles (10), home runs (12) slugging percentage (.709) and on-base percentage (.434). The program's all-time home runs leader with 37 career round trippers, Hughes ranked second in the CAA in home runs and fourth in total bases during the regular season. Defensively, the Apex, N.C., product posted a .957 fielding percentage with just seven errors in 161 total chances.  

 

“Carley once again did an outstanding job in leading us both behind the plate and in hitting,” Jarrell said. “She proved herself to once again be one of the best players in the conference and we look forward to her capping off her outstanding career as a senior in 2009.”

 

Sawyer saw action in 44 games during her freshman season, batting .293 in 123 at-bats. The Chapel Hill, N.C., native ranked second on the squad in slugging percentage (.398) fourth on the team in hits (36), doubles (7) and on-base percentage (.331).

 

“Rachel did a good job coming in and taking over the shortstop position as a freshman,” Jarrell “She is a player that we will be counting on next season to make even more of an impact in our lineup.”

 

In other awards handed out Wednesday, Georgia State's freshman catcher Catherine Lee was named the CAA Player and Rookie of the Year, becoming the first player in league history to receive both honors in the same season. Hofstra's Kayleigh Lotti tabbed was the league's Pitcher-of-the-Year while Pride coach Bill Edwards was chosen as the circuit's Coach-of-the-Year for the first time in his career.
