WILMINGTON, N.C. ? Junior Devan Carroll scored the game-winning goal and sophomore Nassim Berhouni added two goals as UNC Wilmington rallied past Georgia State, 3-2, in Colonial Athletic Association men's soccer action Wednesday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
The Seahawks improved to 2-1 in the league and 5-6 overall. The Panthers, who had a 5-game unbeaten string halted with the loss, saw their mark dip to 0-1-2 and 4-3-3.
Carroll notched his second game-winning goal of the season in the 88th minute when he collected a loose ball in the GSU, slipped past two defenders and tucked a shot inside the right post from 22 yards out.
Jacob Hamilton, a freshman, opened the scoring for the Panthers early in the 42nd minute, when he headed home a cross off the foot of senior Linus Warendh, who assisted on both GSU goals.
Trailing 1-0 early in the second half, Berhouni converted the first of two penalty kicks he had on the evening at the 57:57 mark. UNCW was awarded the spot foul when freshman Shawn Guderian was pulled down in the penalty area.
The Panthers, however, restored a one-goal lead in the 64th minute when Warendh sent a cross from the right side into the box where junior Stephan Minyono was able to chip it past Seahawk sophomore goalkeeper Brock Duckworth.
Berhouni drew UNCW level in the 76th minute on a second penalty kick when a Panther defender was whistled for a hand ball on a cross from the left flank.
Guderian had several chances to break the deadlock following the equalizing goal, but missed a pair of shots from close range as senior goalkeeper Filipe Carvalho made two spectacular saves in a span of 34 seconds.
Carvalho would finish with six saves on the evening while the Seahawks held a commanding 18-11 advantage in shots.
