UNCW Board of Trustees Approves Design Phase for New Tennis Facility

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The UNCW Board of Trustees has approved the prioritized list of architectural firms for the design of a new tennis facility.

The approval allows UNCW Athletics to begin the planning process, including evaluating design options for a facility that will include a minimum of six (6) championship-caliber courts with NCAA compliant lighting. The project also includes a support building designed to meet the operational needs of the men's and women's tennis programs.

The new facility will replace the existing courts while remaining within a portion of the current site footprint.

"I would like to thank Chair Caison and the Board of Trustees for their continued support and for providing us the opportunity to move forward with this important project," said UNCW Director of Athletics Michael Oblinger. "This facility will have a meaningful impact on our student-athletes and the broader tennis community in Wilmington."

Designed to meet both current demands and future growth, the facility will further elevate two highly successful programs while enhancing the overall student-athlete experience. The project will be funded through philanthropic support and designated trust funds.

"This is an exciting time for the program and the tennis community – we are so grateful for this future facility and how it will elevate the student-athlete experience. Our goal has always been to be ranked among the top teams in the country, and this facility will be a major step in making that a reality," said UNCW men's head coach Mait DuBois. "Tennis is a very popular sport in Wilmington, and this will enhance access to the game for everyone and allow us to bring world-class events to our local community."

The UNCW men's tennis program has captured 11 Coastal Athletic Association championships and has advanced to the conference finals in each of the last six seasons. The women's program posted a 10-6 record in 2026 under interim head coach John Ware.
