Former UNCW Athletics Administrator Passes Away

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The UNCW Athletics Department is saddened to announce the passing of former longtime administrator Pat Howey, who retired from the department in 2013 following 30 years of exemplary service.

Howey served as senior women's administrator, assistant athletic director, associate athletic director, senior associate athletic director, interim athletic director, and deputy athletic director during her tenure with the department.

In addition to many of the responsibilities listed above, she has also served as the sports supervisor for women's basketball, men's and women's track and field, men's and women's cross country, volleyball, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's golf, men's and women's tennis, softball and baseball. She also oversaw facilities, sports medicine, strength and conditioning, academics and compliance areas.

A recipient of the UNCW Employee Service Award in 2001, she has served on numerous tournament committees and worked as tournament director on many occasions. She was instrumental in bringing the 1994 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship to Wilmington and served as co-director when the event returned to the Country Club of Landfall in 2010.

A former member of the National Association of Collegiate Women's Athletic Administrators (NACWA), Howey is a 2005 graduate of NACWA's Institute for Athletics Executives. She was nominated for the YWCA's Women of Achievement Award in 2004 and served on UNCW's Task Force on Education and Training Initiatives for Campus Violence Prevention in 2004.

Howey was appointed by former Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo as interim athletic director from April through July 2007, and briefly in the fall of 2010.
