UNCW dropped its opening weekend series to Maryland, picking up an 8-4 win in the middle game of the set.

Outfielder JP Pennella led the Seahawks with a .429 batting average last weekend, scoring three runs and stealing three bases. The speedy red-shirt sophomore was honored as the NAIA Freshman of the Year in 2025 while at Southeastern University in Tampa, Fla.

On the mound, junior Cooper Allen tossed five shutout innings to pick up the win in game two against the Terrapins. In his fourth career start, the righthander scattered two singles and struck out a career-high-tying five batters.

Freshman lefthander Trey Williford will make his collegiate starting debut on Wednesday.

UNCW welcomes Fordham this weekend for three games beginning Friday at 4 p.m.
